#omis #croatia #pirate #piratecity #split Welcome to Omis and A&A Travelling. Omis is a small town and port at the mouth of the Cetina River located 26 km southeast od Split. In the 13th and 14th century Omis was home of pirates(Omiski Gusari), who used their fast boats Sagittae (The Arrow) to attack trade ships at the mouth of the river. During this period the Omis Pirates were the most feared along the Adriatic coast and the trade republics like Venice or Dubrovnik, made non attacking agreements with them, for which the Omis Pirates paid high taxes. The Pope and the Venice Republic tried to pui an end to the Omis pirates by sending the crusaders, but they were defeated by the Pirates the first time. In their second attempt they managed to put an end to the Pirates of Omis. Today Omis is a very popular tourist destination, with a popualtion of 15.000 which in the main tourist season more than triples the amount. Tourism has become the main income source for the city, but also farming, fishing, textile and food-processing industries can be found in the town. WHAT TO DO & SEE IN OMIS? The old town of Omis is the main attraction due to its cultural and historical sights. We recommend the following: The fortress Mirabella, a 13th century fortress situated behind the old town. The entrance fee is 15 kuna, and you will get some exercise due the amount of stairs you`ll have to climb, plus a perfect view of the town. The old town hosts a number of churches and a Franciscan Monastery, which has an art collection and a library with old Turkish documents. The Fortress Starigrad (Fortica), if you wish to experience something special, you should visit this 15th century fortress, but you will have to climb it, as the fortress is situated at the peak of the mountain behind the old town. The climb takes around one hour. Omis Summer Festival. During the main season there is always something going on in and around the town. One of the highlights is the Klapa Festival (a capella singing), which takes place in churches and squares around the town. There are plenty of sport activities in Omis. In the Cetina River you can go rafting. There are several daily departures from the city center and it takes 4-5 hours. Canoing in the Cetina River is a popular activity and tours are arranged from April to September. Minimum age is 14. Other activities include: Diving, Hiking, Paragliding, Hill Climbing, and on the beaches of Omis there are all kinds of water sports available. In August is the culmination of the Pirate activities with a Pirate weekend and a Pirate night. There is also a Triathlon competition, a naval battle where the Pirates attack a Venetian trade ship, and many other activities. THANK YOU FOR COMING A&A Travelling IG:atonio_tadeu
