The Book of Mormon gold plates should be physically impossible according to critics. A block of gold like that would be way too heavy. But this guy found 1 million ways the gold plates could be possible, at the right weight, thanks to this stack of copper disks. 6x6x8 inches of solid gold should easily way over 200lbs, even though witnesses said they weighed closer to 60. Researcher Josh Coates set out to figure out the actual dimensions and size of the gold plates using statements from witnesses, a computer algorithm, and his own experiments. First, he confirmed what others had previously suggested--that the plates likley weren't pure gold, but rather an alloy of gold with copper and silver that would have made it significantly lighter. Second, he accounted for every single variation in how the witnesses described the size of the plates. Some said it was 5 inches tall, some said 6, and those small tweaks make a big difference on the final outcome. Third, the plates weren't a solid block but dozens of thin metal sheets, which would naturally create small amounts of air space between the plates. So Coates fabricated copper disks, stacked them up, and found out exactly how much air space would have been between metals sheets of the right size and compression, showing that there's about a 53% void space. So he took all the variations of metal alloys, he took all the variations in length, width, and height, and he accounted for the amount of air space between the plates. When he ran the numbers, it output almost 1 million viable combinations in which the gold plates are mathematically possible.
