"Nordnorsk julesalme" (eng: "North Norwegian Christmas Hymn") by Trygve Hoff is almost regarded as their second National Hymn by people living in northern Norway. You will hear it everywhere these days, and it is also a regular on Christmas concerts with choirs, orchestra, vocal soloist or instrumental. The lyrics describes how it is living in the arctic part of Norway, the sea and the mountains, the often rough weather and the people living here. My arrangement for brass quintet starts out with muted trumpets playing the melody very softly as a duet, with the tuba playing the root on the chords. Then gradually adding trombone and horn with increasing dynamics with a a full brass sound ending the first verse. Then some change of texture and tempo in the last verse, starting with the horn playing the melody and again with increasing dynamics at the end.
