Here we are testing a phase control motors hall effect position sensor. The position signal is mapped at 120 degree angles which allows 3 signals back to the PCB per rpm. Each on and off signal is occuring at differing rotor position in time so it is technically a phase shift between rotor and signal. You can see the square wave signals forming on the cro and lead/lag. The indoor PCB regulates power supply to the split phase motor design and fixes it once the signals equal required motor speed. One of the advantages of the phase control motor is its flexibilty to work across a number of different air conditioner brands with the manufacturer only needing to set tach speed to their desired operating fan speed ranges. Yes you can bench test a phase control motor postion sensor at your workshop just like I did here. They are also easier to test given they are just main and auxillary winding induction motors with easy resistance testing.
