This is a very good antique Station Music Box made by Paillard of St Croix, Switzerland in c. 1890. The sublime harmony movement has a beautiful sound, and features 6 bells struck by coloured bird and butterfly strikers, along with a central drum with 8 beaters. There are also 3 charming dancing dolls to the front, all of which are original. The movement also boasts a double spring, tune indicator and parachute safety check. It is operated by an old English penny, and plays three tunes per coin. The bells and the drum can also be deactivated at will. The case is veneered in walnut, with a later pediment that nevertheless fits very well with the style of the box. This is a very fine example of a buffet-style Station Box, the likes of which are becoming increasingly difficult to find. The condition of the dolls is original, and one in particular is rather worn, and the nickel on the cylinder and governor guard is a little discoloured, but after 120 years in existence these are small details to be easily forgiven. This box is superb, the sound is wonderful, and it is a joy to behold.
