Our K98 German Sniper New acquisition for us. A German / Nazi K98 Sniper. It “appears” the rifle is real and the scope is real. But the gun has some major problems. The least of which are 100% reproduction bases and rings. The seller was saying the reason they put an original scope on it was because it is a legit sniper. Apparently, according to him, the rifle had the proper receiver cuts when they found it many years ago. He was able to source an original scope, but was never able to find original bases and rings. The seller was an older gentleman. My response: All of that is a cool story. But WE have to judge it as a put together. There is too much fraud and fuck’ery surrounding fake German Snipers. Which is actually fine for us since we run a shooting, reference collection. Some guns are too valuable to shoot. Again, at least for us. So if this gun has issues keeping the OGCA folks at bay, that’s interesting to me. The good: The rifle on it’s own is all matching. Impressively so. The rifling looks very good. This is VERY important for a shooting collection. The JENA scope is “original” in the sense it’s old. But I have no idea if it’s actual WWII production or even correct for the gun. The bases and rings are 100% reproduction, which the seller absolutely disclosed right off the bat. Fair play to him. So it is a legit sniper? Who knows? I certainly don’t. But the only way to even begin the process to confirm that would be to take the gun apart, including the mounts, look at the cuts to see if they are age and 1940’s technologically appropriate. And even then if it still looks plausible…we would have to consult with the appropriate experts to assess the markings and history of this individual rifle. And…the cherry on top. For all that potential work and hassle, if it comes back as a 100% legit German - Nazi sniper, we aren’t going to pay those prices. One, it’s still a put together, even if a legit put together with re-pop bases and rings. And two, the prices a 100% legit, German sniper would command preclude us from putting that in a shooting - reference collection. So for John1911…it is worth what a put together is valued at. And we aren’t paying a cent more. The only variable to determine was if the seller was leaving that day with our money or not. He left with our money.
