Mid-October brings a changeover from summer to winter crops in both the polytunnel and greenhouse. This film shows Part 1 on 10 October and Part 2 on 24 October 2025 – a full transition from the last harvests of summer plants to fresh winter salads. By 12th October, all summer plants are removed for compost. The beds are re-measured and levelled with no new compost added, then given a big watering before planting. In the second part, you see planting which happened 15th October, 9 days earlier.. They were from sowings made on 11th September for lettuce and endive, and 16th September for brassicas, all frost-hardy plants for winter harvests. Ventilation – doors stay open through winter except in gales. Watering – about once a week in November, twice in December, and sometimes none in January, then increasing again in spring. Occasional fleece goes over beds before hard frosts Weeding is minimal, though there are many self-seeded French marigolds, which frost will kill naturally. The first pick will be in late November, then every one or two weeks until late April. This video also shows: 1how to re-wet dry soil, 2 how the no-dig system supports repeat cropping in the same beds, over many years, 3 how to plan a two-crop year undercover (October–May and May–October).
