Vashistha Gufa, also known as Vashistha Cave, is a serene and spiritually significant spot located around 25 kms from Rishikesh. Situated amidst lush forests and hills, the cave is named after the revered Hindu sage Maharishi Vashistha, one of the Saptarishis (seven great sages) mentioned in ancient Indian scriptures. According to legend, after the death of his children, Sage Vashistha sought solace and chose this cave as a place of meditation. It is believed that he attained deep states of spiritual insight here, and the spot has since become a sacred retreat for seekers and meditators. The cave is dark and quiet inside, maintained by the Swami Purushottamananda Ashram, which ensures that the atmosphere remains peaceful and conducive to meditation. A small Shiva linga resides inside the cave, and the natural energy of the space is said to enhance meditation experiences. Outside the cave, the banks of the Ganga offer a perfect setting for contemplation and nature walks. Visitors come here not just for religious reasons, but also to escape the bustle of city life and connect with nature and inner stillness. The tranquil surroundings, the gentle sound of the river, and the spiritual vibrations of the cave make Vashistha Gufa a hidden gem near Rishikesh.
