Day 2 Crowden to White Hill Day two 14.6 miles / 824m ascent We woke up at Crowden campsite in the rain on my birthday to a lovely present and card. As all good hikes, this one starts with climb up past a stone memorial and into the ferns at times head height. A steep rocky climb takes you up from the ferns to a cliff top with great views down to the valley and the winding Crowden Great Brook. We found the shouting rock that Roy at the campsite told us about. From here, if you shout it echoes down the hills and can be heard at the campsite. This may of course be Roy’s joke but we gave it a go anyway and we could, faintly hear the echoes coming back at us. The two hour climb to the shouting stone is followed by a spectacular walk along the ridge before descending down past a series of little waterfalls. Today was so hot that I tried out my new sun umbrella which attaches to the rucksack. It really helped with the relentless heat and after testing it out I think Map Girl now needs one. The path flattens out with flag stones after a slow and steady climb leading to the trig at Black Hill and internet access. This path eventually drops down to cross Dean Clough, a small river to cross and then a ridiculously steep climb to the A 635 which you walk along for a short bit before entering Marsden Moor. At the entrance to Marsden Moor there is the piece of art to ‘frame the landscape’ and then a path which takes you past a reservoir to a river. The steps leading away from the river are a killer but leads to a flatter area with some options for wild camping but it was too early for us so we continued to Black Moss reservoir and beyond along a long flat flagstoned path to the A 62 where just off the path there is a disused pub which is now a basic campsite. We still has some miles in us though and wanted to get to White Hill for wild camp. We stopped on the ‘Dinner Stone’ to admire the views back from where we had come from and met Adrian at the Tor on Marsden Hill where he was setting up camp. It’s a great place to camp with flat ground and wonderful views. We had our sites set on White Hill so said goodbye to Adrian and continued. We had a fantastic sunset at white Hill tor and pitched up for the night.
