Myringoplasty: Eardrum Repair Surgery Myringoplasty (Tympanoplasty) is a procedure to repair a perforated eardrum, often caused by trauma or infection, especially Otitis Media. A perforated eardrum leads to hearing loss and increases the risk of infections entering the middle ear. Frequent colds or water entering the ear are common causes of ear discharge, and bacterial toxins can cause permanent sensorineural hearing loss. Surgical repair is advised for persistent perforations. Approaches for Myringoplasty: Per Meatal: For small perforations or wide ear canals, often done endoscopically. Post Aural: The most common approach, accessed from behind the ear. Endaural: Used for posterior perforations or when a mastoidectomy is involved. Graft Materials: Paper Patch, Fat: For pinhole perforations but with uncertain outcomes. Temporalis Fascia: Commonly used tissue from above the ear for eardrum repair. Tragal Perichondrium: Cartilage from the tragus, often combined with fascia for complex cases. Procedure Overview: Area around the ear is shaved and sterilized. Local anesthesia is administered. Skin incision is made behind the ear. Temporalis fascia graft is harvested. Edges of the perforation are freshened, and the graft is placed over a gelatin sponge. The wound is closed, and a mastoid bandage is applied. Post-Operative Care: Mastoid bandage is removed on day 5; ear pack after 10-14 days. Neomembrane forms in 4-6 weeks. Keep the ear dry, avoid air travel for 3-4 weeks, and treat colds immediately. Notify the doctor if there’s facial weakness, giddiness, tinnitus, or nausea. Anesthesia Options: Local Anesthesia: Injection into the ear and surrounding tissues. MAC (Monitored Anesthesia Care): Sedation without intubation. General Anesthesia: Full anesthesia depending on patient and surgeon preference. "About The Doctor!
