(12 Apr 1995) Portuguese/Nat Former enemies in Angola's civil war are learning how to work together under the guidance of mercenaries who've fought on both sides of the conflict. But the United Nations is concerned about the presence of the former South Africa commandos. Mortar fire was a common sight during 20 years of civil war in Angola. But this time it's just a training exercise. These soldiers used to fight each other. Now they train together under the supervision of former South African commandos. What began as a 30-day contract to guard the country's oil installations has turned into a 40 (m) million (U-S) dollar deal for the commandos to train joint Angolan forces taking shape around a U-N peacekeeping operation. Leader of the crack military force Eben Barlow claims he and his men aren't really mercenaries. He says they are simply offering a service the Angolan government requires. During their days in the intelligence and counterinsurgency forces of the South African army, they fought for UNITA, later turning their skills to the M-P-L-A, which now forms the government. They teach jungle warfare to the combined force being set up under the terms of a ceasefire between the two sides. SOUNDBITE: "They will continue training their people. They will continue improving the overall standard of their army because even when peace comes, they will still need an army." SUPER CAPTION: Eben Barlow, Executive Outcomes. The Angolan government says its satisfied with the services being provided by these crack military men. SOUNDBITE: "The role of Executive Outcomes is very well defined. They helped to prepare the Angolan forces and they had a definite impact on turning around the war situation." SUPER CAPTION: General Ita, chief of Military Intelligence, Angolan armed forces. However there has been criticism of the work being done by the South African team. SOUNDBITE: " The true solution to mercenaries is to make them obsolete, that there is no longer any need for them. When there is no war, they will be too expensive and they will go elsewhere. Let's work on making them redundant." SUPER CAPTION: Alouin Blondin Beye, UN Special Representative to Angola. But the skills of men like the former commandos are much in demand across Africa.
