Today I bring you a cover of my favourite guitar solo, from my favourite song, from my favourite band of all time: 'Comfortably Numb' by Pink Floyd. This particular cover is an attempt at David Gilmour's performance in Gdańsk in 2008. All fans of Pink Floyd likely have a history with their iconic album aptly named 'The Wall'. I remember my dad telling me a story of his first experience with it. When he was a young lad and had heard that the album was also released as a movie and was showing in the cinema - he asked, well, more like nagged, his very conservative mother to go and watch it with him. You can just imagine how that went! She was not very impressed by the esoteric nature of Pink Floyd's message and their distinct creative vision. Despite it being a funny story, it stuck with me. My experience was a little different. When I was 17 years old, our school had an Inter-House music competition. One of the categories of competition was the 'Solo' section, where a lone performer would stand on the stage, in front of the whole school, and flex their instrumental chops to the audience. A younger, more anxious me was the only fella in my house that could play an instrument well enough to perform. So I took one for the team. At the time, this solo was the only thing I played and practiced, I was just obsessed with it. The album in its entirety just cut me right to the core, especially during my school years. I remember walking onto that stage, with my Cort Sterling guitar and a BOSS Overdrive pedal and I smashed out the solo to a quietened audience. Not quiet from awe, but from boredom... I wasn't surprised to be honest. But the parents, also in the audience, of which there were many, graciously gave me a standing ovation. It was such an awesome experience to play through a massive sound system for the first time - and it was great to know there were some in the audience that appreciated what I was trying to do. Anyway, enough with the stories. I hope you enjoy my attempt to playing a solo from the legendary and inimitable, David Gilmour!
