LEGO, one of the worlds most beloved toys and one of the most successful companies in history. The tiny building blocks you remember playing with for hours almost never happened! Here's the story in 3 minutes. Transcript: The Lego, these colorful bricks have sold their way into homes on Christmas morning and under your parent’s unsuspecting feet for over 60 years. This wonderfully simple invention has been the foundation for millions of spaceships, ancient temples, sprawling cities, and massive life-sized monuments. But where did it all begin? When exactly did the Lego sprout up and take the world by storm? The Lego story starts with a single Danish man and a woodworking shop in 1924. Ole Kirk Christiansen ran a wooden furniture store with his family. Until one day, Christiansen’s sons accidentally started a fire in the shop, engulfing the entire building. Along with the 1929 stock market crash, Christiansen, and the rest of the world had hit financial rock bottom. However, Christiansen was adamant to get the shop back up and running. Using what little materials he could afford, he began making one of the cheapest products possible, children’s toys. To push this new image, Christiansen renamed the shop to LEGO, derived from the Danish saying of “Play Well.” While it took awhile for things to kick off, eventually Christensen's creative toys began to gain national popularity. Toys such as his wooden duck, with a small cord used to open the beak, or wooden cars became bestsellers across all of Denmark. And of course, things had gone too well for too long. In 1942, when Germany invaded Denmark, another fire struck Christiansen’s shop and brought the entire thing to the ground. Without the ability to invest in expensive material again, Christiansen set his sights on the newest cheap alternative. Plastic. In 1949, using the simplest mold that he could manage Christensen came up with the Automatic Binding Brink, a series of plastic squares that could interlock and detach from one another to build whatever the user desires. Interestingly, the world was rather opposed to the usage of plastic in children’s toys, some news outlets even reporting it as a cheap alternative that could never replace the stellar quality found in traditional wooden toys. However, the high standards set by Ole Kirk in his products quickly changed the minds of the naysayers, helping pave the path for the future of children’s toys. In 1952, Ole Kirk died, and his son took up the mantle of LEGO, and created the “System of Play” model, meaning that all future shapes and sizes of bricks would be fully compatible with every other brick ever made, and this system still holds true to the most recent sets. Today, Lego has become a titan of the children’s toy industry, spanning major licensing deals with shows and movies, and a slew of spin-off video games and feature films. Lego has even replaced Ferarri in Brand Finance’s annual listing of the “Most Powerful Brand in the World.” And it all started from one man’s workshop, a powerful imagination, and just a few too many fires.
