Bush, President of United States: "It has been an honor to welcome the president and prime minister of an independent Kosovo to the Oval Office. I'm proud you all are here. I welcome you. I'm a strong supporter of Kosovo's independence. I'm against any partition of Kosovo. I believe strongly that the United Nations mission must be transferred to the EU as quickly as possible." 3. We discussed the problems that Kosovo faces, its desire to be recognized by more nations around the world. I pledged that the United States would continue to work with those nations that have not recognized an independent Kosovo to convince them to do so as quickly as possible." 5. Reporters 6. SOUNDBITE (Albanian with English) Fatmir Sejdiu, President of Kosovo "Kosovo will be a country of democracy, a country of all its citizens. It will have a special respect for the minorities. All three get up and shake hands before the cameras STORYLINE: The president and prime minister of Kosovo paid a visit to the Oval Office Monday afternoon for a meeting with President George W. Bush. Bush said the meeting was a milestone for him in his quest to assure an independent and democratic Kosovo. Bush also pledged continued assistance in economic aid, and to help the Kosovo achieve diplomatic recognition by more countries. The President of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu, thanked Bush for the United States' willingness to support Kosovo. He also said that he wishes to have normal relations with the Republic of Serbia. Prime Minister Hashim Thaci told Bush that Kosovo will always be a trustful friend of the United States. He said he also expected good diplomatic relations with Serbia in the future. The president and prime minister of Kosovo have been in the United States for almost a week visiting various officials in the Bush administration and Congressmen on Capital Hill.
