One of my favorite McCartney solo songs, off of Wings 1973 album 'Band on the Run' Band On The Run was mainly recorded in Lagos, Nigeria. But Jet was an exception, being recorded entirely at AIR Studios after the Lagos sessions. It was recorded sometime in September 1973 Paul, Denny Laine and Linda McCartney made up the core of Wings at this time, after members Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough left the group earlier in 1973. So Jet features just Paul and Denny on guitars There were more guitars than I had realized on the song- upwards of five total! Here's a breakdown of all the guitars- Guitar 1: Epiphone Casino- opens the song with the intro riff, plays chords during the verses and throughout most of the song Guitar 2: Fender Telecaster (Denny)- plays the muted chuka chukas on the intro, some sparse chords during the verse, and then the 'ooh, she said' riff Guitar 3: Distorted rhythm heard during the verses and bridge, possibly does the C#m7 chords during the intro Guitar 4: Slide guitar during the bridge- has to be in an alternate tuning Guitar 5: Slide guitar during the bridge- has to be in an alternate tuning The slide guitars had to have been tuned to an alternate tuning because the interval it plays is a minor 3rd. This is not possible in standard tuning with a slide. So I simply tuned my G-string up to G# to give a G#/B min 3rd interval. The slide guitars don't play any other strings besides these two I have McCartney playing most of the guitars on the Epiphone Casino, but it's very possible Denny played more than 'Guitar 2'. Denny is seen playing the muted chunks live, so I assumed this guitar was him. Denny did have a Stratocaster at the time, but his main guitar during Band on the Run was his 1970's Telecaster Deluxe I'm playing my 2021 Epiphone Casino USA with a modded B7 bigsby, and my 2007 Fender Telecaster into a 1974 Fender Pro Reverb amp. I'm using my Analogman King of Tone overdrive pedal, and occasionally an Aclam Windmiller to boost the King of Tone INTERESTING NOTES: 0:02 I was very surprised while listening to the isolated tracks to learn that Guitar 1 does not go Bm Bm C#m D. It goes back down to Bm at the end. The saxophones and bass do go up to D, but not the guitar. You can hear a good isolation of it here- • Paul McCartney and Wings - Jet - Isolated ... 0:08 Guitar 3 playing the overdubbed C#m7 chord has to be Paul, because his Casino has the bigsby whammy bar 0:30 (off-camera) Denny's telecaster (Guitar 2) plays two A chords. This appears in the right channel 0:38 Paul's D/A chord includes an open high E-string- X04230 1:35 The slide guitars enter. I confirmed this part was done with a slide, because at the end of the riff you can hear the notes slide down without fret noise 1:39 Guitar 1 (bottom screen) plays light E major chord notes between each slide phrase 1:57 Guitar 2 does a hammer-on on the B-string from Eb-E here 2:09 Guitar 1 and 3 do galloping A chords 2:16 Guitar 3 (upper screen) plays cool syncopated D/A chords over Guitar 1 2:56 Guitar 3 (upper screen) does muted chugs over the other two guitars' riffs 3:40 Guitar 1 does a slide down on the low E-string 4:01 The song ends on an Amaj7 chord X02224 MY GEAR: 2021 Epiphone Casino USA Royal Tan 2007 Fender American VIntage Hot Rod '52 Telecaster ('51 Custom Shop Nocaster Pickups) Analogman King of Tone Aclam Windmiller Preamp 1974 Fender Pro Reverb Neumann TLM-103 #wings #paulmccartney #jet #bandontherun
