This video features the more common species of brake ferns around Fukuoka City, Kyushu, Japan. The word "brake" comes from middle English and means "fern", so calling them brake ferns isn't exactly correct. The video deals with three closely allied once pinnate species, P. multifida, P. cretica, and P. nipponica, the relatively small bipinnate P. dispar, and two large bipinnate species, P. excelsa and P. wallichiana. Of these P. cretica and P. nipponica are well known in the horticultural trade as "ribbon fern" - usually sold as variegated leaf forms. P. wallichiana has become more popular and available to exotic garden enthusiasts over the last decade. It is coveted for its large size and lovely form. It also shows quite a bit of cold tolerance, a bonus to mid latitude gardeners searching for tropical looking, yet cold hardy plants.
