Business analyst Valerie Ho has always loved handwritten letters. During Singapore’s COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the 29-year-old created Penpals in the Community, an initiative for youths to befriend the elderly through letter writing. She hopes to alleviate the loneliness of social distancing and encourage inter-generational bonding through old-fashioned pen-paper conversations. Business entrepreneur Derek Ong started Food Rescue Sengkang, which sees him rescuing unsold food from wholesale markets, food centres and bakeries and distributing them to the residents. On a typical Saturday, Derek and his volunteers can rescue up to 30 tonnes of vegetables and fruits, feeding thousands of people across the island.
