Track 11 from their debut album “Cognac and Bologna” released in 1980 copyright RCA Records. It was recorded at Triumph’s Metal Works Studio in Toronto. The band was formed by Doug Bennett in Vancouver in 1977 and after several personnel changes, the classic lineup was in place the following year. Bennett, their lead vocalist, also wrote all of the band’s songs. His bandmate Simon Kendall described him by saying “He was a bit of R&B, he was a bit 1940’s, he was a bit Tex-Mex.” I would add that he was influenced by “New Wave” musicians like Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. In fact, Jackson is given “special thanks” in the album’s liner notes. The band built a strong local following by staging shows with quirky themes that guaranteed a good time for all and word quickly spread. Their manager, Sam Feldman, believed in them enough to mortgage his house to acquire the funds needed to record this album. It received average reviews and reached No. 38 on the Canadian chart. The single “Too Bad” reached No. 20 in Canada and the album eventually achieved Gold status. Sadly, the band was never successful internationally and after three albums, most of the members left in 1992. Doug Bennett continued to perform shows as Doug and the Slugs with new musicians. In 2004, during one of their many tours, he had to be hospitalized and died of complications from his heavy-drinking rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle at the age of 52. Written by Doug Bennett and produced by Doug and the Slugs. RIP Doug Bennett. Featuring: Doug Bennett - Lead vocals John Burton – Slide, lead & rhythm guitars & background vocals Rick Baker – Lead & rhythm guitars & background vocals Simon Kendall – Keyboards & background vocals Steve Bosley – Bass & background vocals John “Wally” Watson – Drums & background vocals Two city savages were runnin' from the rain And seeking shelter in the bamboo-curtained room Their clothes are drying on the back of wicker chairs While lazing out the afternoon We're nothing more than friends gone separate ways And no longer parallel lines You'll learn the reasons for doing what was done I can't deny that they're as good as mine Oh, I remember conversations on my roof So whiskey-fueled they had us howling at the stars While laughing at the dark and we finally closed the night As reckless as we closed those bars Oh, I can tell you from the coolness of my room A bond broken, then repaired Forgotten points we made before passing out And carried drunkenly down those stairs, swept away by A tropical rainstorm on the lower mainland (Swept away by, swept away by) A tropical rainstorm on the lower mainland (Swept away by, swept away by) So in the end you're just some poster on my wall And passing by I can't afford the time that you steal Hearing your master call, you finally turn to home Back to what you see as real Well, I heard the small-craft warning long before they came How the gales, ooh, were blowin' for days Clearing the pathway of the branches from the storm I realized that you had made your place, swept away by A tropical rainstorm on the lower mainland (Swept away by, swept away by, swept away by) A tropical rainstorm on the lower mainland (Swept away by, swept away by, swept away by) A tropical rainstorm on the lower mainland (Swept away by, swept away by) Well, I was swept away, well, I was swept away I was swept away, I was swept away Well, I was swept away I was swept, ooh-ooh-ooh, away Away, away, I was swept away Oh, oh, oh, baby
