The public, Manchester United officials and club greats gathered at Old Trafford today to remember the lives lost in the Munich air disaster 67 years on. Head coach, Ruben Amorim, and club captain, Bruno Fernandes, were pictured at a memorial service held outside the stadium, together with Manchester United Women's manager Marc Skinner. Sir Alex Ferguson was also present - the legendary manager pictured with United's chief executive Omar Berrada and head of sport at INEOS, Sir Dave Brailsford. Wreaths were laid and a moment of silence observed after huge crowds gathered. The tragedy on February 6, 1958, claimed the lives of eight Busby Babes and three Old Trafford staff. Eight sports journalists, including the Manchester Evening News' Tom Jackson, also lost their lives in Germany, when the club's plane crashed on take-off in terrible weather at Munich-Riem Airport following a European Cup tie in Belgrade against Red Star. Twenty-three people died in total. Today's service was conducted by the club's now retired former chaplin, the Reverend John Boyers, underneath the Munich memorial plaque and clock at the east coroner of the stadium.
