Myself, Robin and Camille from Black Lilys wanted the message to sound candid and obvious. It's a journey for me to go back to what is essential, with humility and to try being connected to nature via my means of expressing myself musically whilst also connecting with others in the most simple and humble way I'm able to be. I wanted something instrumentally encompassing the ground & the sky, and everything in-between; to remember where we take place as humans. That’s why the bass is really gravelly and the drums have a very organic timbre. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the cello is always aerial, in an abstract sense I find them connecting to the stars and the sky. It was a lot of improvisation at first, with my synths, layering one on another at first and then with Black Lilys we wanted to cut everything; like a puzzle, we reassembled all the synths, and then sampled other synth parts to make a new arrangement. It’s also the first time I did a type of “pop” song arrangement along with a chorus. The challenge was great because there are a lot of pop songs I love and it can be so efficient to communicate messages lyrically through this format. Sébastien Labrunie: The idea behind the process was to use actual real life footage, mostly nature shots from different point of views, merging drone shots with macro shots, and distort them to a point where life rhythms and motion are preserved but the original footage form disappears. Evoking how everything in Nature is interconnected and how us humans shape it, warp it, and destructurate it, creating something else, still natural. The result is like an echo of a transformed nature, struggling to preserve its original form, but still full of energy, moving forward in beautiful ripples. The workflow involved kitbashing various video shots and using them to displace vertices of a screen sized rectangular mesh in Touchdesigner. Key to the effect was controlling the video's contrast and gamma to adjust the height map to have an homogenic feel between shots. I also used a Datamoshing setup using Streaming video flux within Touchdesigner for the final glitch effects. Post FX like bloom and color corrections were then added in After Effects. Before the final Post FX pass, the footage was also put through Topaz Gigapixel frame by frame to add one more level of abstraction to the footage, also creating interesting visual artifacts while the reconstruction AI algorithm tried to “clean” the footage, making it more “natural” from its own artificial perspective. Feel free to try to identify what shot is what originally, you’d be surprised! Hope you’ll like our “We Are Nature” music video as much as I enjoyed creating it, along with the sweet sweet tune by Odalie and the Black Lilys.
