With no royal heir, the elders must choose a new king from among the men of the village. To test their character, every eligible man is given a single seed and instructed to plant it. After one year, they must return to the village square with their results. The man with the best plant will become king. Among the participants is Sabelo, a poor orphan boy raised by his wise grandmother, Grace, who has always taught him that everything in life must be done with pure intentions because good results follow honesty. Though he does not fully understand her lessons, he believes in them. As months pass, Sabelo carefully plants and waters his seed — but it never grows. Meanwhile, other men begin producing strong, beautiful plants. Unknown to Sabelo, many secretly replace their seeds out of fear and pride. Mocked and humiliated, Sabelo is tempted to do the same. But encouraged by his grandmother, he chooses to remain truthful and prepares to face the judgment day with nothing but an empty basket filled with soil. On the final day, while others proudly present tall green plants, Sabelo pours out only soil before the queen. The crowd laughs — until the queen reveals a shocking truth: all the seeds had been boiled and treated so they could never grow. Every man who brought a plant had cheated. Only Sabelo had been honest. Because he alone returned exactly what he was given, he is chosen as king. His reign becomes known across the land, and his story is preserved for generations as a reminder that truth may leave your hands empty — but it will never leave your life empty.
