This weeks Big Stone Lake ice fishing report covers the latest tips and techniques for locating and catching perch and big bluegill. Topics also include ice conditions and travel on the lake. Happy New Years! The bite on Big Stone Lake is starting to pick up again. Fishing the last couple of weeks has been up and down, largely due to some severe swings in weather. What I have noticed is that there appears to be a large number of keeper size perch in the lake, scattered throughout the basin. Instead of catching numbers of fish in relatively few areas, it seems like you can catch a few good ones everywhere. The good news is that recent trips showed some promising signs of fish starting to school up again, which should make locating hot spots easier. The bluegill bite is definitely on an upswing, which is typical for this time. Generally the bluegills can be a little tight lipped early season, but pick up feeding as the season progresses. This week I noticed many more daytime gills actively feeding. Which is promising considering their normal morning evening feeding times. Ice conditions on the lake have gone from terrible to excellent! We now have around 17"-19" in a lot of areas of the lake. Extreme cold last week cured a bout of slush we were having trouble with after the previous snowstorm. Be sure to check local ice conditions when venturing into new areas. Good Luck Fishing! Ryan
