After 20 years of installing, supervising, testing, and demolition of tiled showers, I am confident that I have found the best way to waterproof showers for tile in the United States. Using a variety of methods and products from around the world, I have adapted this system to work with with our local California methods. Combining mud, Schluter drains, foam curbs, fleece membrane, and roll on waterproofing; this method uses old and new technology together to achieve a strong and watertight shower installation. There are many ways to waterproof a shower, but when I say BEST I take into account three major considerations; waterproofness, strength (longevity) and speed of installation. Of course, all while keeping the quality of the finished product in mind; proper slope, levelness, and squareness of the finished installation. The reason I use a fiberglass backed gypsum wallboard with a waterproof face (denshield) is because a.) it is approved for use in showers, b.) it also allows for direct installation of tile over it or the option of a mortar bed (float) can be implemented over it, and c.) it is way stronger with less deflection compared to foam wallboard. The reason I like to use sheet membrane is that a.) it provides the most durability of any bonded type waterproofing, b.) it can be used directly over an uncured mortar bed, and c.) it can be customized to almost any shape. We like mortar beds because it is fast and adaptable to any substrate no matter how out of level it may be and it is much stronger than a foam pan. In fact, you never see foam pans in Europe or Australia where they have much stricter building codes. Another thing I like is that we can adjust our slopes to accommodate different tiles. Pebbles for instance, require a little more slope to drain the water off between the pebbles. I like the Ardex 8+9 over the sheet membrane because it provides a completely sealed waterproof pan (not just wet proof) and also provides a better bonding surface and more durability to the sheet membrane on the floor. Ardex 8+9 also adds speed, because it will bond directly to uncured mortar (it is a cementious product in of itself) and also is ready for a flood test in 4 hrs compared to 24 hrs needed if it was sheet membrane (kerdi) by itself.
