In this video, I set up my second dirted tank for aquatic insects including beetles and various hemipterans using the Walstad Method for a simple, naturalistic set up. This video showcases the first 2 weeks of this 45 gallon tank after set up and all the very active residents of the tank. We troubleshoot the sudden, almost overnight appearance of algae and then work to correct it through the introduction of various invertebrate organisms that feed on it. The algae subsides. I've been occasionally running a small filter rated for a 10 to 20 gallon tank, on this 45 gallon tank. It is probably not necessary but it helped to clean the water up the first few days and maybe through that brief outbreak of algae. Once the leaf litter layer on the bottom of the tank is fully added in, and a microbial equilibrium is achieved, a filter will not be necessary. It should be used only if there is some visible problem as it may affect the growth of the plants through putting too much oxygen into the system and it may suck up small invertebrates like ostracods. The majority of insects in this tank rise to the surface to take up air.
