Sheldrake's Boatyard, nestled on the banks of the River Dee in Lower Heswall on the Wirral Peninsula, has a rich tapestry of history that mirrors the transformations of the local maritime landscape. From its origins as a bustling sailing club to its recent closure as a beloved restaurant, A Maritime Hub In the early 20th century, the area now known as Sheldrakes was a vibrant sailing hub. The Dee Sailing Club, as it was then known, thrived due to the navigable waters of the River Dee. However, by the 1980s, natural silting of the river rendered the waters less navigable, leading to a decline in sailing activities Embracing change, the former sailing club was transformed into Sheldrakes Restaurant, capitalising on its picturesque location. With panoramic views of the Dee Estuary and the Welsh mountains, it became a culinary destination, known for its Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and stunning sunsets The establishment underwent significant renovations, including the addition of a £1 million viewing gallery, enhancing its appeal for private dining and events. After two decades of operation, owner Helen Demetrios announced the closure of Sheldrakes in February 2023, marking the end of an era. Plans have been approved to convert the building into a private residence, reflecting the evolving nature of the area The Boatyard Today Adjacent to the former restaurant, the Heswall Boatyard remains active, offering services such as free mooring. While many boats in the vicinity are abandoned, the boatyard continues to be a focal point for maritime enthusiasts and photographers drawn to its rustic charm
