Haydn's Symphony No. 24 (here played by the Northern Chamber Orchestra under Nicholas Ward on Naxos Records) deserves the closest possible attention. It reeks of innovation, formally and timbrally. Its first movement embarks on an astonishing expressive journey, with themes that undergo remarkable transformations on their way to its happy ending. The slow second movement is an aria for flute and strings--but then, the entire symphony celebrates the sound of the wind section particularly. Virtually unknown, almost never played in concert, the work is an original masterpiece of both form and expression. Come have a listen!
