A numbered address. A guarded gate. A city the map refused to show. This is the hidden truth of Krasnoyarsk-26—born from the fires of Soviet WW2 and perfected in Cold War secrecy. Our documentary traces the real story of the “closed city” carved into Siberian granite on the Yenisei River. Planned in the late 1940s as the USSR rebuilt after the Eastern Front, Krasnoyarsk-26 (today Zheleznogorsk) became home to the Mining & Chemical Combine—an underground industrial complex that later housed plutonium production reactors and dual-purpose heat and power systems. Built under Stalin’s security regime and sustained by layers of intelligence, logistics, and technology, the town operated as a ZATO: restricted, numbered, and invisible to outsiders. While the Red Army’s victory ended World War II, the strategic race that followed reshaped Soviet industry, engineering, and scientific priorities—connecting wartime evacuation, secrecy, and supply chains to a new era of weapons, reactors, and closed territories. Using archival records, engineering histories, and eyewitness recollections, we reconstruct how Krasnoyarsk-26 functioned: code names, postal numbers, and controlled perimeters; underground rail spurs and galleries; and a workforce that balanced routine safety with extraordinary responsibilities. Neutral, factual, and cinematic, this episode examines Soviet WW2 legacies, state security, and the real mechanisms of hidden industrial power—where intelligence, strategy, and technology turned a forested hillside into a city that officially did not exist.
