It’s day 50 of my Southeast Asia backpacking journey, and I’ve hit a wall. Mentally drained and craving a slower pace, I head to Phnom Penh’s iconic Central Market — not for sightseeing, but for a much-needed mission: to retire my filthy old travel hat and find a replacement. The Central Market, once the biggest indoor market in Asia, is a sprawling maze of stalls selling everything from knock-off electronics to handcrafted jewellery, cheap watches, and fake Gucci bags. I stumble through its chaotic corridors, trying not to lose my mind — or my sense of direction — while fending off friendly shopkeepers and endless offers of beer. Along the way, I vent about travel burnout, hunt for fake AirPods, and finally manage to haggle a new cap for $3.50. It’s not glamorous, it’s not thrilling — but it’s real. And sometimes, that’s what backpacking is. I finish the day with dragon fruit and a bittersweet goodbye to a hat that’s followed me across continents. 🎒 Raw, honest, and a bit messy — just how I like it.
