The Circumetnea Narrow Gauge Railway (Ferrovia Circumetnea) is a 950mm gauge railway around the flanks of Mt Etna in Sicily, one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. Opened in 1898, the line ran from Catania to Riposto, via Paternò, Adrano, Bronte & Randazzo. In June 2024, the Catania to Paternò section was closed in order to be converted to become part of the standard gauge Catania metro system. In this third of a series of videos on the line, we will travel to Paternò from Randazzo, a distance of 55km. Between Randazzo and Adrano is the most scenically spectacular section of the line climbing to the summit of the line at 976m above sea level and descending through Bronte, famed for its Pistacchios. There are spectacular views across Sicily and to the Nebrodi mountains, with a stunning section around Bronte as the train crosses dramatic cooled lava flows. Our train is ADe 20, a 1970s designed diesel-electric railcar built by Fiat Ferroviara, TIBB & OMS. 0:00 Introduction 0:44 Randazzo 5:45 Gurrida 9:35 Maletto 12:02 Galleria Rocca Calanna (summit tunnel) 14:30 Bronte lava fields 18:45 Bronte 23:53 Adrano Nord 25:42 Adrano Naviccia 26:25 Adrano Centro 26:44 Adrano Cappellone 28:14 Biancavilla Pozzillo 29:06 Biancavilla Poggio Rosso 30:18 Old formation destroyed by lava 31:35 Approaching Paternò 33:20 Paternò
