A quarter-century ago it was home to Pablo Escobar and one of the world’s most powerful drug cartels. But that’s old news, even if negative story lines have a much longer shelf life than positive ones. Medellin has earned the reputation as among Latin America’s most progressive cities, with a smart multi-modal transportation system and green environmental initiatives galore. Cutting-edge social policies helped transform one of the city’s worst slums (Comuna 13), now a thriving tourist entertainment district. The city’s other attributes have never changed—a wonderful year-round springlike climate; outstanding Colombian cuisine; great cultural opportunities, magnificent scenery and (of particular interest to expats) modest living costs.
