We revisit the Problem with Firmware in this edition focused on the recently revealed regreSSHion OpenSSH vulnerability. The trouble with firmware spans many factors, including a lack of standards, insecure network connections, and commonly reused code. Mike Huckaby and James McCarthy shed light on how open source leads to issues often getting overlooked, leading to hidden risks in the countless IoT and OT devices around us. In this case, this particular SSH vulnerability was patched in 2006 but was then reintroduced around 2019 or 2020. What's the size of this issue? There are about 14 million publicly available SSH servers on the open internet, so it's pretty big. After discussing the vulnerability, Mike and James look at how you can find devices running the vulnerable version of SSH and how to mitigate the issue. But first, James hits the latest from the xIoT News Desk, including stories on a disturbing trend in IoT and OT vulnerabilities and the Bosch BCC100 thermostat, which is commonly found in hospitality spaces. For more information on the thermostat, visit the link here: https://psirt.bosch.com/security-advi... What's Phosphorus LIVE? IoT, OT, IoMT, oh my! The vast range of xIoT devices being utilized by enterprise organizations today represents a new cybersecurity frontline that affects every industry. One of the biggest challenges for today’s cybersecurity and information technology leaders is having a clear and complete picture of what xIoT devices they have – and then how on earth to fix and manage them. Join hosts Mike Huckaby and James McCarthy bi-weekly for informational and candid discussions aimed to simplify the world of xIoT and talk about real-world situations, the worst xIoT offenders, and the state of current threats that cybersecurity and IoT/OT leaders are facing today.
