CONGRATULATIONS! You are having a baby soon! You are excited, nervous, and probably aren’t sure exactly what to expect when you turn from expecting to parenting. With over 25 years of pediatric experience, let’s dial down some of that anxiety by sharing answers to questions that all new or expecting parents should or usually do have. • Should you, as a first-time parent, meet the pediatrician before the baby is born? Emphatic YES! When you are looking for a pediatrician to trust with the care of your child for the next 18+ years, a bunch of 5-star reviews and recommendations from friends are helpful, but meeting and sitting down in the office can seal the deal. There is no better time to meet the pediatrician than in those few weeks or months right before the baby is born. At ActiveKidMD, we welcome soon-to-be parents to schedule a no-cost “Meet the Physician” visit at our office. It is so much easier to park your car, find the office, walk in, and take in the office vibe without having to bring in a car seat, stroller, diaper bag, and that sleeping or crying infant. You can get a good sense at that first visit if the office is a good fit. What are you thinking or asking at that visit? • Is it easy to access? • Is it close to our home and work? • Do the pediatricians and staff try to get to know you? What else do we discuss on that visit? • What to expect after birth, including basic newborn care • How our office works • The chance to meet office staff • Confirmation of accepting insurance (that’s not the fun part) Other questions you should be asking us • Tell us about your practice and childcare philosophy At ActiveKidMD, we pride ourselves on providing individualized, comprehensive, and evidence-based care that acknowledges the best course of action may be different for each family. We like to go over alternatives and risks/benefits so we can confidently share in the decision-making process. We are also team players, not hesitant to contact and collaborate with colleagues. • Do you have any specialty areas? At ActiveKidMD, you are not just getting board-certified pediatricians, you are also getting board-certified sports medicine specialists who can work with your child through the teen and young adult years. What should I have in my newborn baby bag? • Diapers, burp clothes, and many outfits • The bulb syringe given to you by the hospital after delivery • Saline. This can be used with that bulb to suction snot and congestion. How do you communicate with your pediatrician both during and after office hours? Who is going to answer calls? Is there a phone tree? After hours, are you routinely referred to urgent care or the emergency room, or are there options for connecting with your trusted pediatrician? When you call ActiveKidMD you are greeted by a human voice (during and after regular hours), and we try to respond to urgent matters within a few hours with a call/message back or offer a scheduled appointment. We do offer telemedicine visits both during and after regular office hours (including weekends and evenings) to reduce the need for urgent care or emergency room visits. We also have a secure portal message system, and we try to respond within 24-48 hours. • Can I schedule same-day appointments when my child is sick or hurt? We try to make things easier by routinely offering same-day appointments with your trusted pediatrician either in the office or via telemedicine. • Now, let’s talk about car seats Take the time to fit car seats and bases in all your cars several weeks before the baby is born and keep practicing. Trying to do this with a crying or sleeping baby adds extra stress. • When is the first office visit after birth? Be prepared to see us between 3-5 days after the baby is born and be prepared that your baby will have lost weight from birth. That’s okay and normal (happens to both breast and formula-fed babies). We want to make sure that the loss isn’t excessive. • Yellow Eyes in Newborns - What Pediatricia... Putting in time to visit the office in your last trimester will be a value add that reduces stress and lets you make a commitment and connection with your pediatrician to find the best fit for your baby. We certainly hope that ActiveKidMD can be part of that process. We are a smaller office that tries to make connections with families with same-day and same-week availability ActiveKidMD.com 714-974-2220 Share this with family and friends who have newborns.
