春になると、門内の名木が満開の桜で色づきます。 文禄三年（1594年）豊臣秀吉が母、大政所（おおまんどころ）の三回忌法要を高野山で執り行ったあと、この桜の木の下で花見を催しました。そのとき秀吉は、この桜の前で歌を詠みました。 「年を経て　老木も花や　高野山」 解釈には諸説あるのですが、 年月を重ねてきた己への自負を大きな傘のように咲き誇っていたこの桜に重ねたのでしょうか。それ以降、この桜を〝傘桜〟、〝太閤桜〟と呼ぶようになったと云われています。 （※動画は今年撮影ではありません） In spring, the historic tree inside the gate is colored with cherry blossoms in full bloom. In the third year of the Bunroku period (1594), Toyotomi Hideyoshi held a cherry blossom viewing event under this tree after the memorial service for the third anniversary of the death of his mother, mandoro at Koyasan. At that time, Hideyoshi composed a poem in front of this cherry tree. "Even aging, old trees still blossom in Kōyasan”. While it is interpreted in different ways, we wonder if he might have overlapped himself having aged with this cherry blossom, which was blooming like a large umbrella. Since then, this cherry tree has been called "Kasa-zakura", literally an umbrella-like cherry blossom tree or "Taikō-zakura", literally a cherry blossom tree of Taikō, the title of Hideyoshi.
