Tadeusz Faliszewski - Szkoda twoich łez, dziewczyno (1929)

Tadeusz Faliszewski -- Szkoda Twoich łez, dziewczyno (It's No Use Crying, Girl) Tango z rewii „Cała Warszawa" teatru Morskie Oko (Tango from theatre Morskie Oko revue „All of Warsaw") (Muz.Artur Gold -- Tekst Andrzej Włast), Syrena-Electro 1929 (Polish) NOTE: This beautiful tango absolutely belongs to Top Ten in the history of Polish chanson. Composed by Artur Gold as one of severel great hits, which are listed in the Morskie Oko program of 1929 revue "Cała Warszawa" -- in pass of time has survived its competitors (such as Henryk Wars' tango "Angelita" or foxtrott "Cała Warszawa") to become one of the Polish evergreens. The title "Szkoda twoich łez, dzewczyno" has been for generetions a popular melancholic saying in Polish -- kind of a handy motto for all kinds of the lovers' farewells or partings. For those viewers who just recently joined this channel, I must add a few words about creators of this song. Artur Gold was a fine prewar composer of dozens of tangoes, shimmies and charlestons. Together with such giants of prewar Polish dance music composers as Henryk Wars, Henryk Gold (Artur's cousin) or Jerzy Petersburski (composer of two world-famous tangoes: "Oh Donna Clara" and "It's A Last Sunday") Artur belonged to the most elitary society of the show business in prewar Warsaw. Rich and famous -- suddenly, in the first months of the Sensond World War, he became a dropout and with a yellow David star on his shoulder, he joined hundreds of thousands of Poles of the Jewish origin, who had been concentrated on a tiny scrap of Warsaw's territory, called the "Jewish Ghetto". It was organized in 1940 and surrounded by the wall by the German-National-Socialist occupiers of Poland. In 1943, Artur Gold he was pushed into a boxcar and carried in one more death-transport from Warsaw towards the gas chambers of Treblinka. But before death, one more nightmare was prepared for him. Selected from the crowd just before erntering the gas chamber, Artur Gold and a few other musicians were grouped on a platform and guised in the clowns' frocks and hats, made play tangoes, foxtrotts and shimies over the heads of the German soldiers, of barking dogs and the ong line of naked people, walking towards the smoking chinneys of Treblinka crematorium. Andrzej Włast was the most popular author of hundreds of Polish prewar song lyrics, he was also the director of theatre Morskie Oko. It was a biggest revue stage in Warsaw of the turn of the 1920/30s. Having ambitions of making his theatre a "Polish Moulin Rouge", Włast used to travel to Paris several times a year, and brought back with him new ideas for his stage releases in Warsaw. Therefore, Morskie Oko shows glittered glittered with feathers and sequins of the chorus line and the essential decorative element on stage had to be the ramp or a staircase for the leading star - on contrary to more satyrically and intellectually-oriented theatre "Qui pro Quo", which was its biggest competition in Warsaw. However, in September 1939 Andrzej Włast's fate drastically changed. He shared way to the Ghetto with other artists of the Jewish origin. After some time, he managed to flee onto the so-called "aryan-side" and was kept in a shelter by his Polish friends -- however, suffering from the extreme form of depression, one day that bon-vivant walked out from his safe place to the street and let himself be shot by German patrol. Tadeusz Faliszewski was a Polish singer and cabaret actor, who in the years 1927-39 managed to beat all records in number of hits recorded for Syrena Electro. He was a leading star for Syrena Records, where he recorded under his own name and under pseudonyms Jan Pobóg or Jerzy Nowogródzki as well as anonymously, for Melodja-Electro and Odeon. Arrested by Germans during the Second World War and sent to a concentration camp in Gusen, in Germany. He survived it only thanks to his singing, as member of the music ensamble in a camp. In 1945, he travelled to Great Britain and then to Chicago, where he died in 1961.
