Sameem Abedin, MD, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, describes the findings of a study that compared the safety profile and survival outcomes of patients treated with low-intensity re-induction therapy for persistent disease after a single intensive induction cycle for newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Overall, it was found that low-intensity re-induction therapy resulted in shorter hospital stays and a lower transfusion burden, with similar remission and long-term survival rates compared to patients treated with intensive induction chemotherapy.
