Veronica Ryan OBE Windrush sculptures public unveiling ceremony - 02/10/21

On 2 October 2021 Hackney unveiled the first permanent public artwork in the UK honouring the Windrush generation. Artist Veronica Ryan OBE’s sculptures Custard Apple (Annonaceae), Breadfruit (Moraceae) and Soursop (Annonaceae) are on permanent public display near St Augustines Tower on Narrow Way in Hackney. At the unveiling ceremony, Mayor Philip Glanville and Cllr Carole Williams, the UK’s first lead member for Windrush, spoke about the importance of the sculptures as part of the Council’s commitment to honouring and acknowledging the contribution of the Windrush community. The artworks were commissioned by Hackney Council and produced by Create London with Art Fund support and additional funding from the Henry Moore Foundation.
