This joint talk is led by a communications professor and a political science professor. It examines why a free press is not just a democratic ideal, but a democratic necessity. Drawing from media theory, political institutions, and real-world case studies, this talk explores how journalism shapes public opinion, holds power accountable, and creates the conditions for informed civic participation. From a media perspective, the discussion addresses how ownership structures, digital platforms, misinformation, and the decline of local news affect what information reaches the public—and whose voices are amplified or silenced. From a political science lens, the talk situates press freedom within democratic systems, analyzing how governments respond to scrutiny, how press constraints emerge in both authoritarian and democratic contexts, and why transparency and watchdog journalism are essential for legitimacy and trust. Together, the speakers connect theory to current events, highlighting global and U.S. examples where press freedom has been challenged or defended. The talk invites audiences to think critically about the relationship between media, power, and democracy, and to consider what is at stake when journalism is weakened—or when it thrives.
