From a media perspective, the discussion addresses how ownership structures, digital platforms, misinformation, and the decline of local news affect what information reaches the public—and whose voices are amplified or silenced. From a political science lens, the talk situates press freedom within democratic systems, analyzing how governments respond to scrutiny, how press constraints emerge in both authoritarian and democratic contexts, and why transparency and watchdog journalism are essential for legitimacy and trust. Together, the speakers connect theory to current events, highlighting global and U.S. examples where press freedom has been challenged or defended.
