Explore Virginia's Complicated Past at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture | Get Out of Town

While in Richmond, Virginia, Laurita and Lauren visit the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, which is the oldest cultural institution in Virginia and serves as the state's history museum. Its major permanent exhibition, "The Story of Virginia," traces the state's rich and varied history from its indigenous inhabitants to the present day, acknowledging the troubled aspects of Virginia's past, such as its role in codifying American slavery and being the largest slaveholding state in the country. The museum also has an exhibition called "The Lost Cause," which sheds light on the mythologized narrative of the Civil War and the legacy of the Confederacy. Following their tour, Lauren and Laurita reflect on how the Confederate statues were erected on Richmond's Monument Avenue during the early 1900s and why the symbolism was so powerful when the statues were removed beginning in 2020.
