Sky News Weather explains how floods form and the threat they pose as severe weather continues to batter parts of Queensland. Australia is a big land of extremes, and flooding is the country’s second most deadly natural disaster. Flooding and severe thunderstorms continue to inundate homes and threaten the lives of many in south east Queensland. As little as five millimetres of rain in the space of 10 minutes can cause flash flooding, in which dry land is completely immersed in water. A severe storm can strike a hill or a mountain nearby and send water rapidly downhill towards towns and residential areas. Close to half of flood deaths occur in a vehicle, which means flash flooding can catch people off guard when they are on the road.
