Reverse racism in the Northeast? Or are we avoiding the real question? | Editorial by Karma Paljor

The recent incident in Delhi has once again brought the issue of racism against people from India’s Northeast into public focus. Three women from Arunachal Pradesh were subjected to racial slurs, prompting outrage on social media and responses from across the country. Many have called for accountability and a deeper conversation about discrimination that people from the region face in mainland cities. Another question that has surfaced following the incident and often surfaces after such incidents is “reverse racism.” But we often forget what racism actually means. It is not limited to insults or personal dislike. It involves exclusion based on physical features, questioning someone’s nationality, stereotyping professions and normalising humiliation in everyday life. From being called “chinki” or “bahadur,” to being mocked for food habits or stereotyped in workplaces, many from the Northeast describe patterns that go beyond isolated incidents.
