This is one of the few true overland routes left in the western U.S., where you can leave pavement behind and rely entirely on your vehicle, gear, and crew. Along the way, we camped deep in the La Sal Mountains, dropped into Paradox Valley, explored old mining relics, tackled Red Canyon’s technical terrain, and stopped in small towns like Nucla to catch our breath. We faced trail repairs, coolant issues, broken gear — and a whole lot of unforgettable scenery. This is real overlanding, not just a scenic drive.
