The city of Newport staff and leaders are working overtime this Veterans Day responding to upheaval over rumors that federal immigration agencies are eyeing the coastal town's small municipal airport as the site for a new immigration detention center. City and state leaders say there is a basis to the rumors, although they have been unsuccessful in getting concrete answers from federal agencies. Rep. David Gomberg, D-Otis, whose district includes Newport, said they have been able to confirm that the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter that has been stationed there since the mid-1980s has been moved to North Bend. "With no warning at the worst possible time of the year, with the crab season starting and the weather changing, and that's going to put lives at risk," Gomberg said during an interview with KATU on Tuesday. "That's going to put lives at risk all the way from Tillamook to Florence, because if those rescue helicopters are coming to us from Astoria or from North Bend, they're not going to get here in time to help anybody who might, God forbid, fall into the water. The Coast Guard, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security, holds a long-standing federal lease at the Newport airport for the helicopter. More here: https://katu.com/news/local/city-newp...
