QR codes aren’t just a tech convenience - their story begins inside Toyota’s factories in 1990s Japan. Barcodes were too limited, storing only about 20 characters and requiring perfect alignment to scan. Engineers needed something faster, more durable, and able to hold much more information. That challenge landed on the desk of Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary. Inspired by the Japanese board game Go, he designed a two-dimensional system where data could be stored both horizontally and vertically. The result was the Quick Response code, capable of holding over 100 times more data than a barcode and scanning ten times faster. Released in 1994 without a patent so it could be freely adopted, the QR code spread far beyond factories. From airline boarding passes to restaurant menus, from supply chains to mobile payments, it became a global standard. During the COVID era, even local vendors and small businesses used it daily. What started as an obsession with efficiency has become one of the most recognizable digital symbols in the modern world. #qrcode #technology #invention #digital #history
