Korowai Tribe: Building a Giant Treehouse 40 Meters Above the Jungle

Deep in one of the most remote regions of West Papua lives the Korowai, a tribe that can only be reached after hours of walking through swampy forests filled with leeches, flies, and mosquitoes. In this documentary, we follow the last Korowai family that still preserves the ancient knowledge required to build their extraordinary high treehouses. No one knows exactly when this tradition began, but these towering structures allow the Korowai to live above the humid forest air—far from biting insects and from predators, including humans. Today, such extreme treehouses are rarely constructed. Most modern Korowai houses stand on practical stilts, around 3–4 meters above the ground, as shown at the beginning of this video. Still, it is the giant high treehouses that have fascinated explorers and visitors for centuries. This unique craft is now a dying art. Almost all Korowai have moved into government-built houses in towns and villages along the riverbanks. What you see here may be one of the last truly traditional Korowai treehouses ever built. #korowai #documetary
