Chiasm - Red Outside

I'll swear it up and down: Despite the fact that I actually don't listen to her as often as I'd like to admit, Chiasm is one of, if not my favourite artists of all time. With that being said, she didn't really start off at that point. I thought she was great, sure, but I heard her song Isolated off of VTM - Bloodlines, and happened to like other songs on the album Disorder - Eventually buying it, which proved to be one of the best financial decisions of a bitter, teenaged Mr Red. But despite that album eventually becoming one of my favourites of all time, one thing that I haven't really talked about is Chiasm's greatest strength for dedicated listeners, as well as her biggest weakness for more casual listeners. Chiasm's music grows on you. It really does. Almost every song Chiasm has produced, I can sing at least a few lines from it, and that's because Chiasm has an unparralelled knack for creating music with good ear wormy instrumentation, infectious vocal melodies set to a melancholic dreamlike etherium. A lot of this comes with repeated listening - I would certainly say that Chiasm is one of the most rewarding musicians to listen to repeatedly, because you will notice certain things she adds to her tracks that add texture to the sound. When a new album comes along though it sort of doesn't have the benefit of repeated listens at least at first - And this is where Reset comes in. I have been waiting for Reset for about 6 and a half years. Yeah I know, it's retarded to wait 6 years for an album, but people waited longer for Chinese Democracy. And when Reset came out, I admit that I was almost... underwhelmed by it in a way. Which I suppose is understandable, considering. Anyway, thats why Reset took so long for me to get to. Now that I've had about 3 months to stew on this album, let's talk about it. Reset wears a lot of sleeves, and it wears a lot of them well. The album opens with the energetic, bounding World Left from the Mice on a Wheel EP, only... Admittedly I prefer the more raw and crashing sound of the Mice version of World Left, but though I'd say it lost some of its energy, it has a much more nuanced form at the beginning of this album, and I suppose opening with sound like it had on Mice it would blow out eardrums of an unsuspecting listener. Still a great track overall! From thereon, the album takes on a perhaps more calm vibe, and it feels as though Chiasm teeters between two musical extremes: Balancing on a tightrope hovering over two sides, one of soothing audial waves lovingly crafted by a mastress of sound, the other of suffocating industrial noises that submerge other, more traditional instruments. The approach is very effective - A good example of this would perhaps be the calm exit of the song "The Puzzle" which gives way to "Sky Crane"'s abrupt, grinding entrance, before her vocoded voice and a brittle piano layer over harsher, more mechanical sounds. Space Lights and Red Outside are two other songs that deserve mention - With Space Lights feeling like a real congealing agent that melds the album together into a whole at the end, despite not being Chiasm's most consistent album. At some points in the song, Chiasm genuinely sounds like an angel, which isn't surprising since Rohn has sung in church before, doing solos no less. The lyrics tug and the instruments pull on the emotional response, and the final line in the song, 'Go find the sky', is inspiring to say the least. Red Outside, in contrast, is a rather dreary and baleful track. The synths that open it are consistent throughout the song, and are only added to by more depressive and dire piano and bass. Red Outside feels absolutely despondent, unsettled and stewing in its own despair. The track's placement, after the album as a whole, feels like apocalypse after the advent of hope; They found the sky, but the sky was red. Perhaps the best thing about Reset is the fact that it feels like a reset - Going back to Chiasm's roots a bit. Even the cover art is similar, only now Emileigh Rohn is facing the opposite way. Perhaps that's how Chiasm intended Reset: Not just as a homage to the legacy of Chiasm, but a bookend. At 36 minutes, Reset is the shortest of Chiasm's full lengths to date. It's a morsel in comparison to those it stands with, but it leaves a good taste and offers an experience all its own. Personally I wonder where Chiasm plans to go - If this will be her last album, or if such speculation is foolish, if not insulting, but if it is a finale to Chiasm's storied, incredible journey, after it's finished, I'll definitely hit Reset.
