On March 27, CIArb Brazil Branch partnered with Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and Vienna International Arbitral Centre of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (VIAC) to run a practical experiment on how AI can perform as a decision-maker. In the contained but complex context of the 30th Vis Moot case, 2023 finalists Laurenz Faber and Antonia Hotter (University of Vienna), and Marko Došlić and Fani Spalević (University of Belgrade) had a rematch before two ChatGPT 4.0 bots (prompted by Christopher Kee and Cesar Pereira C.Arb FCIArb) and presiding arbitrator Patrizia Netal. The experiment opened with welcome remarks from Niamh Leinwather and closed in a lively Q&A with a well-informed and keen audience, after 11 rounds of prompts and respective responses, questions, points of feedback and decisions from ChatGPT. It goes without saying that the pleadings made by such outstanding advocates were beyond the reach of AI. Speakers and participants alike highlighted all it can already do and its enormous potential to become an indispensable tool in international arbitration. We at CIArb Brazil Branch are grateful to many people who played a role in this project, especially the Vis Moot directors; Niamh Leinwather, Stella-Jo Thurner and the amazing VIAC team; and the group that made the magic happen (Andre Guskow Cardoso, Fernanda Romero G. Pereira, Douglas Amorim de Oliveira, Leonardo F. Souza-McMurtrie and Luísa Quintão).
