The Central Government is set to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2024, according to sources from the Ministry of Home Affairs. As per these sources, the rules and regulations of this law will be issued before January 26th of this month. In 2020, violence erupted in Delhi in opposition to these laws, resulting in the death of more than 50 people and injuries to hundreds. Now, as the government prepares to enforce these laws, several questions arise: Who will be granted citizenship? Who will be deported from the country? What documents will be required for you to remain a citizen of India? Ultimately, how beneficial will these laws be for the country? Let's explore. Even before the bill came to the Lok Sabha, it was controversial, sparking protests across various parts of the country. The dissent began notably in Northeast India, especially in Assam. Subsequently, demonstrations took place in Aligarh Muslim University, Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, and Jamia Millia Islamia University. On the night of February 23, 2020, violence erupted at the Jafrabad Metro Station after a gathering, escalating into riots. While the Indian Citizenship Act has been amended six times (1986, 1992, 2003, 2005, 2015, 2019) until now, this recent amendment has faced opposition due to its religious-specific provisions, offering leniency in granting Indian citizenship to non-Muslim illegal immigrants. Under the CAA, individuals persecuted on religious grounds from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities, will be eligible for citizenship. Only people from these three countries can apply for citizenship under CAA, and the application process will be online. Applicants must disclose when they came to India, and if they lack a passport or other travel documents, they can still apply.
