As i pore over the charts here in Australia back 40 years ago in 1979, I am always finding little gems and encourage me to take the road less travelled with my clips sometimes! In May of 1979 I discovered a listing from a Jack Clement and a title 'When I Dream'. I immediately thought of the Crystal Gayle recording and found out it was the same song. So here they are. Jack's version I do not recall hearing but it spent 14 weeks in the Top 100 but it just scraped into our Top 40 at #40. I have been familiar with the Crystal version despite it not being a hit here, as I had bought a vinyl collection of hers in the early 1980's and then a CD decades later. The composition is by one Sandy Mason Theoret and it was the title track for Crystal Gayle's 5th album in 1978 (despite having been originally recorded and issued on her 1975 self titled debut LP) and was issued as a single in the American spring of the following year. It was a Top 3 Billboard country hit but missed the Top 40 on the pop chart. There is a beautiful poignancy to Jack's version but there is no denying the power and purity of the voice of Crystal Gayle. Like a lot of folks around the world, I fell in love with 'Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue' ; starting a life long adoration for this sublime vocalist.
