Column Capitals and Bases

Royal Corinthian manufactures capitals and bases from several composite materials: RoyalCast cast Fiberglass, RoyaLite lightweight fiberglass or FRP, RoyalStone synthetic stone, RoyalThane polyurethane, and RoyalWrap PVC, all of which come with a lifetime warranty. We also offer RoyalCrete, a cast stone product, for those interested in a segmented or weathered look. These products can be made in halves or to any plan type if required. For replacement caps and bases, especially to replace rotted wood, rusted or corroded metal, or crumbled concrete, the most common material we use is our RoyalCast cast fiberglass, which is a misnomer since the polymer marble composite doesn’t contain any fiberglass. Fiberglass reinforcement isn’t needed in the caps and bases since they are much thicker than our column shafts that contain fiberglass. These caps and bases are sanded and then painted using latex paints. Our standard caps/bases sit around the column shaft like a sleeve. Our smaller columns and some larger ones are made to nominal diameters and widths so our 12” columns for example are actually 11-1/2”. If your existing column is bigger or smaller, we can adjust the hole opening on our standard products. When we widen our hole opening, you will lose some detail, but it’s usually insignificant unless you have a really odd sized column. If your column is smaller than ours, you can also caulk the difference rather than have us adjust the hole opening down. We also have made many caps and bases for true sized columns that aren’t listed on our website so chances are we might have something that will work for what you need. Many wood columns have the cap sitting on top of the column shaft rather than around it and the base sitting under the column shaft. At Royal Corinthian, we are able to easily change our caps and bases to work for these load-bearing applications. We can plug our molds to create a wall for the column shaft to sit on. Our caps and bases work perfectly for true sized wood columns not just nominal ones. For example our 12” bases would be ideal for a column that measures a true 12” in diameter or width. We can also make fully solid caps and bases. This solid base is made from our RoyalStone material, which is available in many colors and textures including a coral product that has actual coral and shells in it. And of course we can make solid bases from our all of our materials. We can even make capitals with integrated rain caps or make them separately. The topmost part of a capital is called the abacus and the bottom most part of the base a plinth. We can remove the plinth or abacus on our caps/bases, shorten or raise the height of the plinth or abacus, we can add vents to our plinths which is recommended for wood columns, and we can make our square plinth or abacuses round, a rarity in the column industry. For simple craftsman style replacement caps and bases for square columns, we usually use our PVC material or fiberglass. More ornate decorative capitals and Tuscan, Doric, and Attic bases are available in all materials except PVC and polyurethane, with fiberglass being the preferred option for replacements. As mentioned, our decorative capitals and a few others sit on top of the column shaft and add height to it. Typically, the column shaft gets cut down to the astragal or neck ring if such exists on the column being used, and the decorative capital sits on top of it. For our smaller capitals, 6”-16”, we have an extended neck or nipple that slides into the column shaft opening. We can provide these capitals without the nipple thereby making the hole opening bigger in which case these capitals can go around a column shaft if needed rather than sitting on top of it. Or they can sit on top of column shafts that don’t have a hole opening that is compatible with the size of the standard nipple. If the 500+ standard caps or bases that we offer won’t work for you, customization is something we do relatively inexpensively and frequently.
