Happy New Year! In October 2026, it will have been 5 years since Windows 11 released. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft is cooking up a bunch of features for the OS this year, and there's more than just an endless stream of AI. In 2026, dark mode is being improved with more older dialogs supporting it, context menu decluttering is finally happening, and the UI is being refined with new taskbar animations and Settings dialogs being updated to match the Windows 11 look. We also have some bigger features, including the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) for desktop PCs, laptops, etc., as well as platform and security features like point-in-time restore and administrator protection (latter delayed from 2025). Video wallpaper support, inbox Sysmon and a modern Run dialog are all also coming to Windows this year. And, of course, agents and AI, but there's much more than just that. Like 2025, 2026 will have monthly feature drops, with six confirmed for the first half of the year (Jan-Jun), which will likely include many new features. Version 26H1 is not a feature update that your PC will get, and 26H2 is for now a mystery.
